Diathermy

Diathermy in physiotherapy is a modern and highly effective method of treatment for a variety of sports injuries, muscle, and arthritic pains, but also for chronic diseases. Most diathermies have a pulse and continuous emission functions, have ready-made treatment protocols, and are the most common form of static physiotherapy.

It is a non-invasive technique that uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to generate heat deep within the tissues, improving blood circulation and activating the natural healing process. The energy is non-ionizing, which means it does not affect the structure of the cells.

More generally, therapeutic heat can be applied both on the surface of the body and in-depth. For surface heat generation, hot patches, infrared lamps, etc. are usually used. In the above, the maximum depth is 1 cm. Similarly, for generating heat at a greater depth, it is suggested to use diathermy where it penetrates from 3cm to 5cm. The 2 categories into which diathermy is divided are short-wave diathermy with a frequency of 27.12 MHz and microwave diathermy with a frequency of 2.450 Mhz.

Diathermy machine uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to generate heat in the body tissues. The electromagnetic waves penetrate deep into the tissues and are absorbed by their molecules, causing heat to be generated. The heat then promotes blood circulation and increases the availability of nutrients to the tissues, thus triggering the natural recovery process.

Some indicative conditions that benefit from diathermy are the following: muscle injuries, vertebral diseases, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, neuralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, bruises, fractures, sprains, etc. Some of the effects are improved circulation and blood flow, improved metabolism, increased muscle and tissue temperature, and reduced tissue stiffness.
