Aspirator accessories

Aspirator accessories are suitable to achieve proper suction. The following aspiration replacement parts are required together with the aspiration device: suction container, suction catheter, suction connecting tube, suction trolley (optional), and suction filter (optional).

Specifically, the suction catheter is connected to the container (attached to the suction device) via a suction connecting tube. Trolleys for aspirators are often available for suction devices, so that they can be easily moved during use, and in many cases, a suction filter is needed.

The recommended type and size of suction catheter varies depending on several factors, including age (infant, child, or adult), suction route, location of retained secretions, size of tracheal cannula, and amount and thickness of secretions.

Each of the suction catheters is designed for different use. More specifically, suction catheters with an opening (valve/suction regulator) allow the user to adjust the suction between continuous and intermittent by blocking and unblocking the opening with the user's thumb. Flexible suction catheters are used specifically for nasopharyngeal and tracheobronchial suction. Rigid stem catheters are specially designed for nasal aspiration and oral aspiration of secretions, allow continuous aspiration, and do not have a valve.

The suction container is suitable for collecting secretions during suction. The suction bag must be emptied at least once a day and more often if it fills up to ¾ of its capacity.

Suction filters provide antimicrobial protection to the patient by preventing liquids from entering the tubing circuit of the suction device. Suction filters should be changed according to the manufacturer's instructions or more often if recommended by your healthcare team.
