Surgical scissors

Surgical scissors are suitable for every medical specialty with blunt or sharp ends, in various lengths depending on the medical specialty. They are designed with absolute precision and attention to detail, to offer doctors and surgeons the possibility to perform operations easily and accurately. The blades of the scissors can be either curved or straight.

Surgical scissors or operating scissors come in different types, each of which is intended for different uses and procedures. Some of the most well-known types of surgical scissors are:

  • Mayo scissors: they are one of the most common types of surgical scissors. They are usually made of stainless steel or titanium and are available in different sizes. They have a semi-blunt tip and the blades can be straight or curved.
  • Pott scissors: used in vascular surgery and cardiac surgery. They are usually used in combination with the No. 11 & No. 15 blade.
  • Metzenbaum scissors: Similar to Mayo scissors, but have longer handles and a narrower middle section. They are commonly used in organ surgery as they are designed for cutting soft tissue. The blades can be straight or curved, but the tip will always be blunt.
  • Iris scissors: designed with a sharp and thin edge, they are mainly intended for use during ophthalmic surgery, but also for the removal of thin tissue and sutures.

For longer life, surgical scissors are made of different materials, each of which has its own advantages and characteristics. More specifically:

  • Stainless steel: It is rust-resistant, strong, and durable. Depending on the carbon content and combined with other factors, they create different levels of flexibility and hardness in the finished product. Due to the high amounts of chromium in the material, the surface is protected from corrosion, which is why it is preferred in most surgical instruments.
  • Tungsten carbide: It has properties of high hardness, high strength and density, corrosion, and heat resistance.
  • Titanium: It is a particularly lightweight material, which makes it the number 1 choice of surgeons.
