Oxygen concentrators

Oxygen concentrators are medical devices that filter and concentrate air, providing a constant flow of oxygen to the user, following a medical recommendation. This makes them particularly useful for people suffering from respiratory conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, or cystic fibrosis. They have adjustable flow and volume, which is recommended by the doctor.

Oxygen concentrators can be either stationary or portable. Stationary oxygen concentrators are designed to be installed usually in the patient's home and are powered by electricity. In contrast, portable oxygen concentrators can be used anywhere since they are small, easy to transport, and battery-operated.

Unlike portable oxygen concentrators, stationary oxygen concentrators contain a humidifier that is used to dehumidify the oxygen. This prevents the formation of dry sputum and dry throat.

In addition, stationary oxygen concentrators are differentiated according to the maximum oxygen flow per minute they can deliver, 5 or 10 liters per minute, depending on the patient's needs. They are respectively called low-flow and high-flow concentrators.

In both cases, the patient can obtain the oxygen concentrator in 2 ways: in the form of a rental with or without a prescription, or by purchasing a device.

In case of a prescription of a low or high-flow oxygen concentrator by the attending doctor (pulmonologist or cardiologist), the cost of the rental is fully covered by the insurance fund. The prescription is usually for 3 or 6 months and the prescription codes are:

The use of an oxygen concentrator requires a set of consumables that are recommended to be replaced every 15 days for better performance of the devices and for hygiene reasons. The oxygen concentrator consumables are the oxygen humidifier - for humidifying the O2 during use -, the oxygen connecting tube - if an O2 extension tube is used -, the oxygen extension tube, the nasal cannulae, and the water trap. Opinions need to be renewed every 3 or 6 months depending on the recommendation of the doctor.
