Cryosurgery is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. Also known as Cryotherapy, it is used to treat a number of diseases and disorders, most especially skin conditions like warts, moles, skin tags and solar keratoses. Liquid nitrogen is usually used to freeze the tissues at the cellular level. Cryosurgery is used as the primary treatment for early prostate cancer that is contained in the prostate. It is also performed when cancer returns after other therapies. The procedure is used often because of its efficacy and low rates of side effects.

Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery with a cryogun is the coldest (-196º C), most effective, and most versatile cryosurgical technique available. LN2 applied with a cryogun is much colder and therefore more effective than LN2 applied with a swab (-20º C), nitrous oxide (-75º C), and disposable cold sprays (-55º C to -70º C).
