Sterilization Intecators

Sterilization indicators are designed to ensure the effectiveness of sterilisation processes. They provide visual confirmation that the desired sterilization conditions of laboratory equipment are met in places such as healthcare facilities, surgical environments, cosmetic centres, food industries, etc.

There are two types of sterilisation indicators: chemical and biological sterilisation indicators. Each type serves a specific purpose and provides levels of assurance about the effectiveness of the sterilisation process. Chemical sterilisation indicators are the most commonly used type of sterilisation indicators. They react to specific sterilisation conditions, such as heat treatment or exposure to steam or hydrogen peroxide. They are usually available in tape or label form and change colour at the desired sterilisation conditions. The colour change provides a quick visual confirmation that the sterilisation process has been successful. Similarly, biological sterilisation indicators - as opposed to chemical indicators which only measure physical conditions - directly test for the presence of living micro-organisms. They contain a known population of highly resistant microorganisms such as spores, which are placed next to the objects being sterilised. After sterilization, the biological markers are incubated and observed for growth. If no growth is detected, it indicates that the sterilisation process was successful in killing all microorganisms, providing a higher level of assurance compared to chemical indicators.
