, or icing, is an important step in the R.I.C.E
. protocol Injuries come with symptoms of infl ammation such as pain and swelling. If the injury goes untreated, the damage may worsen, which could delay recovery. Cold therapy
prevents the injury from spreading while reducing pain and swelling. It also promotes a swift recovery.
The R.I.C.E. (Rest, Icing, Compression, Elevation) protocol is effective in the acute phase of the injury.
1 - REST: When injury occurs, it is best to rest by sitting down on the ground or on a chair to avoid causing further damage.
2 - ICING: Relieve swelling, pain and muscle spasms by applying cold to the affected area.
3 - COMPRESSION: Prevent the swelling from spreading and reduce pain by applying appropriate compression to the area. Ask the injured person if the amount of compression feels right.
4 - ELEVATION : Raise the injured part of the body above the heart to reduce swelling.
This protocol consists of applying a four-step treatment:
Rest, Icing, Compression, Elevation.
